Amblyopia, which is seen in about 3% of people, occurs when the eye does not find normal vision during childhood. This disorder, which is usually seen in one eye, is due to a lazy eye vision disorder due to various factors such as refractive errors (nearsightedness, myopia, or astigmatism), eye deviation (lochia or strabismus), or the lack of clarity of the visual path (caused by factors such as cataracts, corneal opacity, or drooping eyelids) occurs. The lack of clarity of the image in the sick eye and the better image created in the healthy eye causes the brain to choose the healthy eye to see between the two eyes and actually blocks the path of sending the image from the sick eye to the brain, or so called the vision of the sick eye. "turn off"

Diagnosing lazy eye is not easy, because parents will not notice their child's vision problem until the child does not have a clear problem or has a clear eye deviation. The ophthalmologist also diagnoses lazy eye based on the difference in vision power between the two eyes or the weakness of vision in both eyes. Measuring visual acuity in children is a difficult task, and the ophthalmologist must estimate the child's visual acuity by special methods, including examining how one eye focuses and follows objects while the other eye is covered. It should be noted that poor vision in one eye does not always mean lazy eyes. Because sometimes this problem can be corrected by prescribing glasses. Sometimes, other eye diseases such as cataracts, infections, tumors, and other intraocular disorders cause a decrease in vision, and if it is possible to treat them, the child's vision will be improved.

Treating lazy eye:

Fortunately, lazy eye can be easily treated if diagnosed at the right time. Treatment for lazy eye is usually to close the healthy eye and force the brain to see with the lazy eye. This treatment may take weeks or even months, of course, the healthy eye should be opened periodically. In cases where laziness is caused by refractive errors, prescription of glasses or contact lenses will cause image clarity in the defective eye and treat laziness. Cases in which laziness is caused by eye deviation can be treated with surgery and correcting the deviation. One thing that should be noted is that the development of the visual system takes place between the ages of 8 and 10, and the treatment of lazy eye after these ages is very unlikely. Therefore, if the lazy eye is not treated at a young age, after the age of 10, there will be no treatment in most cases and it may lead to a severe loss of vision in one eye.

To prevent lazy eye, the child should be examined by a pediatrician after birth in the maternity hospital and at the age of 3-4 months and 2-3 years by an ophthalmologist. Fortunately, a plan to prevent lazy eye has been implemented in Iran recently, in which all children in kindergartens and pre-schools are examined for free. Therefore, it is recommended that if you have not taken your child to an ophthalmologist and your child is of kindergarten age and ready, participate in this plan to ensure the health of your child's vision.

Important note
All parents should know that the treatment of lazy eye due to obstruction of the visual pathway (such as the presence of cataracts) is successful only if the underlying cause is diagnosed and treated in the first two to three months of life.

According to the above explanation, it can be said.
The effective factors in the success of lazy eye treatment are:

  • The intensity of lazy eye
  • Age of the child at the time of treatment
  • The cause of it
